After the eclipse...

More of the Antarctic Coast from our Qantas Flight

Our original flight plan was for 12 hours.  The plane carried extra fuel in preparation for any unforeseen difficulty in lining up for the eclipse run.  The eclipse run went so well, the pilot decided to give us an extended Antarctica tour.  So we flew back to the coast line for more views of the continent.

These pictures don't do justice to the view and the flight, the picture on the right is that of thousands of icebergs floating out to sea.  Each iceberg is a least a mile in width.

This picture on the left is of the ice crinkled with crevasses for miles and miles.  The majesty and scope of this view is hard to describe.  From the plane, it looks like a white blanket thrown on the floor, until you realize that each "wrinkle" is a mile wide and several miles long.

Here is another look at the ice shelf with icebergs caught in the ice, until the next thaw.

Finally, tired and happy, our plane flew back to Melbourne.  John and I got back to our hotel in Melbourne and slept for 14 hours.  What a GREAT day!
